The bond, in any species, between mother and young is quite incredible. One of the glorious things about spending so much time with animals is to watch the various family stories unfold on a daily basis. Our jobs put us on the forefront of watching the greatest show on earth…unedited!
Looking back on some of the jaguar sightings I have had over the last 6 months I realized that I never showed the footage of Yara and her sub-adult male cub. This was filmed back in June and shows the female jaguar being joined by her rather large cub. It is simple, natural and magical. What makes this scene even more special is that it takes place in the daytime and right on the main road that runs through Caiman Ecological Refuge.
The hours and hours that the Projeto Onçafari team spends in the field is really starting to pay-off as the jaguars are truly starting to relax in the presence of cars. We, as a team, recently celebrated our 100th jaguar sighting of the year. This in itself is a truly remarkable feat. Even more impressive, however, is not just the number of times we have found jaguars, but rather how the quality of the sightings has improved leaps and bounds.
I can only imagine how with time the sighting quality will continue to improve as further trust and respect is earned. I look forward to seeing how the bond between jaguar and man unfolds.
