It is no coincidence that they called this place Caiman Ecological Refuge…the Caiman are everywhere! I am a big fan of the ‘Jacare’, as they call them in Portuguese. They are not aggressive like the Nile Crocodile. In many regards they must be considered as quite cute animals. Their small proportions make them much less intimidating. Every time I approach a Caiman I am astounded as to how close they allow me to get to them. There is a wonderful platform of trust that has been developed here. In many parts of the Pantanal the ‘Jacare’ has been fiercely shot and poached for their skins. That is not the case here! Here, at Caiman Ecological Refuge, they have been protected for many years and the result is that one is treated to incredible sightings of these prehistoric animals.
